A few years ago Australian director David Michôd made waves with his gritty drama Animal Kingdom, about a young man caught up in the middle of his criminal family. Not only did that film go on to critical acclaim, but it even made an appearance at the Oscars when Jacki Weaver was nominated for Best Supporting Actress (Meliaa Leo won for The Fighter). Now Michôd is back with another film, The Rover, and it looks like it may be one of the most gripping films of the year.

Starring Guy Pearce and Robert Pattinson, The Rover is a twist on your standard postapocalyptic story. It's not set in some zombie- or virus-stricken world, it just takes place a decade after society as we know it has collapsed. It then follows a nomadic man (Pearce) who is seeking revenge on a gang of thieves who stole his car, and to get that revenge he's willing to team up with one of their own (Pattinson).

As you can see from the below trailer, The Rover looks like a beautifully photographed, intense tale of one man who decides to say screw it all and chase down the men who took the one thing he had left. And if you're the type who instantly dismisses Pattinson because of his Twilight days, this is further evidence as to why he shouldn't simply be ignored.

The Rover will be playing at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival. It opens in New York and L.A. on June 13, and then expands across America on June 20.

"Things fall apart," promises the newest trailer for David Michod’s The Rover, a gritty crime thriller in the same vein as the director’s gripping Animal Kingdom. And with this new tease comes the big(ger) news that The Rover has officially been selected for the 2014 Cannes Film Festival, scheduled for May.

The trailer was shared via A24’s official YouTube page.

Michod sets The Rover is a post-apocalyptic society, where the normal rules of civilization have faded. It calls to mind the mise-en-scene of his native Aussie "brother" George Miller, and every time I see a car speeding along a desolate highway in the above Rover clip, it makes me think we’re going to see "Mad" Max join the fray.

Instead, we get Guy Pearce, playing a loner who is associated with an abandoned drifter (Robert Pattinson) after the man is left to die by his brother. The two embark on a mission to… well, we’re not l00% sure yet, but here’s the synopsis A24 shared with us: THE ROVER, David Michod's highly anticipated follow-up to ANIMAL KINGDOM, is set in a world 10 years following the collapse of society. The rule of the law has disintegrated and life is cheap. The film follows hardened loner Eric (Pearce) as he travels the desolate towns and roads of the outback. When a gang of thieves steals his car they leave behind a wounded Rey (Pattinson) in their wake. Forcing Rey to help track the gang, Eric will go to any lengths to take back the one thing that still matters to him. Michod also wrote the film based on a story he conceived with Joel Edgerton."

The shot of Pearce failing to look up as a car crashes outside his window gives me shivers, for some reason. There’s something so disconnected about it.

The Film Stage

To go along with its announcement as part of the 2014 Cannes Film Festival line-up, A24 Films have now dropped the full-length trailer for David Michod‘s Animal Kingdom follow-up The Rover. Set in the near-future, the “existential western” teams Guy Pearce with Robert Pattinson as they trek through the Australian desert to hunt down a gang of criminals who have stolen their car.

Considering this one is part of the Midnight Screenings section at Cannes, we imagine things will be getting fairly dark and that sort of dread is on full display here. Check out the trailer, Australian poster, and U.S. character one-sheets below for the project also starring Scoot McNairy, Anthony Hayes, Gillian Jones, Susan Prior, Nash Edgerton, David Field and Jamie Fallon.

The Rover hits theaters on June 13th in limited release, before expanding nationwide the week after.

Fear The Man With Nothing Left To Lose. So goes the tagline of David Michod's "The Rover" starring Guy Pearce and Robert Pattinson, and with the film now headed to Cannes, A24 has dropped a new trailer and a couple of posters for the thriller. And yes, it looks pretty damn good.

Already showcasing his skill at capturing men pushed to the brink in "Animal Kingdom," Michod's latest takes it even further. Set ten years after the collapse of society, with the rule of law now tossed out the window, the story kicks off when Rey (Pattinson) is carjacked and left for dead, only to fall into an partnership with loner Eric (Pearce), who helps him track the down the gang of thieves. And the story, conceived by Michod and Joel Edgerton, looks like one packed with a grim sense of place and a palpable atmosphere of a post-apocalyptic world.

And oh yeah, the song in the trailer? That's Sol Seppy's "Enter One" which you can listen to in full below. "The Rover opens in New York and L.A. on June 13th and expands nationwide on June 20th.

Fear the man with nothing left to lose. Wow - this is indeed a must watch. After being announced as part of the Official Selection at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival earlier this morning, A24 Films has launched the full theatrical trailer for David Michôd's The Rover, a post-apocalyptic western thriller starring Guy Pearce and Robert Pattinson. We featured the first riveting teaser in late January, but this time they show even more of the story without giving away anything, and damn, it looks incredible. From the emotion in Pearce's eyes, to the bleakness of the world, this is one of my most anticipated to see this summer.

10 years following the collapse of society, a loner tracks the gang who stole his car from a desolate town in the Australian outback with the forced assistance of a wounded guy left behind in the wake of the theft. Australian filmmaker David Michôd (Animal Kingdom) writes and directs The Rover, with a story credited to Joel Edgerton & Michôd. The film is described as an existential western following people from all corners of the world who have come out to the desert to scrape out an existence. Petty criminals, miscreants and hustlers thrive in the Australian Outback, a haven for felons yet again. A24 Films will release The Rover in theaters starting June 13th this summer.

Director David Michôd's breakout hit is one of the finest films of the past decade and anything he now does, we will be inevitably excited about. It also helps that a rather fantastic new trailer has just dropped for his follow-up film.

The Rover is a gritty post-apocalyptic thriller that stars Guy Pearce and Robert Pattinson and it's just been announced as part of the Cannes line-up this year. The new trailer gives us a look at what we can expect and, like Animal Kingdom, we're not expecting a happy ending...

Today, we’re back with the full trailer and news that, yes, it still looks great. So good, in fact, that it’s an official selection of the 2014 Cannes Film Festival.

Just announced, ‘The Rover’ will premiere at Cannes this year, which sadly most of us won’t be able to make. The good news is that we have the brand new trailer for you right here, along with two new posters for the film. Here’s a quick refresher course if this is the first you’re hearing of all this:

‘Animal Kingdom’ – which introduced us to Joel Edgerton and earned an Oscar nomination for Jacki Weaver – was fantastic and Michod has proved himself to be a director to keep your eyes on (he’s already working on his next project with Brad Pitt). Also, it’s another impressive right turn from Pattinson, who continues to show he can do solid work that doesn’t involve playing an angsty vampire.

After its debut next month at Cannes, ‘The Rover’ opens in New York and Los Angeles on June 13 and nationwide on June 20.
